9 Must have Google Play & Apple store mobile apps for Nigerian millenials

According to this report by Terragon, a data analytics and mobile advertising company, Nigeria is the most mobilized country in the world. This means most of the internet traffic in Nigeria originates from a smartphone.

It is safe to say 95% of millenials in cities like Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt etc have either an Android device or an iPhone. Quite a good number of this population posseses both an Android and an iOS device.

As Nigerians increasingly depend on mobile phones for everything including work and pleasure, we put together this list of must-have apps for Nigerian millennials.

The list excludes popular apps like Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp and Instagram since almost everyone uses them already.

We are looking at the lesser known apps whose functions we consider quite essential. We’ve ensured the apps mentioned herein are platform agnostic, meaning, you will find them both on Google Play store and the iOS App store.

Although we asked our Instagram followers to recommend their most used apps while researching for this post, what you’ll find on this list are apps that we’ve personally used.

At Lekki Republic, we try as much as possible to recommend only things we have experienced ourselves.  In no particular order of favourites, here are:

9 must-have apps for Nigerian Millenials

 1. Evernote

This is notepad on steroids. Evernote helps you make notes on the go and access it wherever and whenever you need it. It takes your notes and syncs it to its servers in real time so you can retrieve it immediately. Imagine being inspired and writing your wonderful idea on a piece of paper so you can use it later only to find out you have misplaced that precious piece of paper when you need it. That will never happen to you with Evernote.

With Evernote, you can do much more including create to-do lists, add photos, scan and add handwritten notes and audio. All of your data is saved immediately and you can always access it anywhere from any device. That’s like having a notebook without having to carry it physically.

2. Shazam

must have android and ios apps

We’re music lovers at Lekki Republic and Shazam is the app that fuels that love. Shazam helps you discover the title of any song and the artist who sang it. If you hear a song you like and you don’t know who sang it, all you need to do is open Shazam and let it listen. Shazam will return with the name of the song, the artiste who sang it, the song art, video and lyrics. Shazam is one of the first apps I install each time I buy a new device.

3. Cowrywise

must have android and ios apps

Cowrywise is an innovative app that helps Nigerians automatically save money at given periods. You can set the app to automatically take a certain amount from your bank account and save it for you daily, weekly, monthly or any other period you choose. The interest rates on Cowrywise are higher than that of traditional banks. It is a good app to help you save towards important expenses like house rent, purchase of a new car, payment of school fees, saving to invest or to use on a rainy day. We are not financial experts, therefore, we advise you to make your own independent research before putting your money into Cowrywise or any other online financial service.

4. 7-minute workout app

The 7-minute workout app helps you do a full body exercise from a very tiny space without necessarily hitting the gym or using any special equipment. All you need to complete the various workouts on the app is a chair and little space to accommodate your body for stretches.

5. Pocket

For those of us who do a lot of research on the web, Pocket helps us save all the interesting links and articles we find so they can be retrieved anytime we need them. It’s a more advanced feature than the default bookmark feature on your browser. Once you put a link on Pocket,  it loads the article immediately without refreshing the website. I won’t be able to explain this app until you download and use it.

For those of us who are interested in learning international languages like Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Russian, this is the app for you. Dualingo makes language learning fun and easy. It uses gamification to make things pleasant and little reminders during the day to nudge you into learning some new words in whatever language you are interested in. There are over 25 international languages to choose from. Guess what? It’s free to learn these languages on Duolingo. Check it out here.

8. Truecaller

This is quite a useful utility app. It helps you identify people who call you even without them being on your phonebook. You can use Truecaller to lookup the owner of almost any phone number.
