The Real Story Behind The Ongoing Violence In Lekki
Reports of violence in Lekki have flooded the internet. What many do not know is the real story behind the violence.
Here’s how I witnessed it this afternoon. A group of shirtless and machete wielding okada riders were seen convening at the Itedo gate from the Ikate entrance of Lekki chanting where them? Where them? This had caused a little uproar as people initially thought they were cultists.
Upon probing, a bystander had revealed that the okada men were preparing to clash with Lekki policemen who had began to seize their bikes.
Not long after the bike riders zoomed off towards Admiralty way, a convoy consisting of about 6 police cars and an armored personnel carrier was seen moving towards the Ikate gate. Not wanting to be a casualty to the brewing violence, I quickly escaped the scene but not before probing further as to what is really happening.
From what I heard, about 2 weeks ago, the Police had called for a peace meeting with the Okada riders and in the course of the meeting, ordered each rider to put on gear which they pegged an N30,000. The Okada riders had actually agreed to buy the gear for peace to reign only for the policemen to begin to clamour on them barely 2 weeks after the supposed truce. This the okada guys have refused to accept. As for the gunshots on Admiralty way, I don’t know if its coming from the riders or policemen. Please be safe out there. Its barely 2 months since the deadly robbery incident happened in Lekki phase 1.
